Alternative School Programme (Non-Formal Education)

Akshardeep Logo The basic thoughts which saw the beginnings of an alternative educational programme for children living in extremely backward slums gradually took shape in the form of the Akshardeep Alternate Schools Project .

This project is currently being conducted in Bibwewadi and the Pimpri-Chinchwad areas of Pune city since 1998.

The hallmark of this project is that the Non-Formal Education (NFE) or Alternate classes are necessarily conducted in the community in which the child lives.

The teacher also hails from the from the same community and the timings, and the teaching methods are innovative and sufficiently flexible so as to cater to the educational needs of children coming from varying backgrounds of poverty and deprivations, and from a wide variety of family and social situations and difficulties.

The curriculum is based on the curriculum prescribed by the State Dept of Education, but is taught differently making it more enjoyable and easy to learn and comprehend.

The Akshardeep Alternate Schools project uses the play-way and the non-formal education methods. The children are given all the support for their all round development. They are taught to cope with and master the basics and develop the capacity and ability which is required to cope with the educational demands of the formal schools and the curriculum where they would be subsequently mainstreamed
