Children from slums who desire to study, need a clean, quiet and a conducive place to study.
Abhyasikas in the slums were thus initiated in the Upper-Indira Nagar slum in Bibwewadi for children
from Std V to Std X. At the Abhyasika or Study Centre the children have access to textbooks and other
self-study material along with on-the-spot guidance from a teacher. These Centers are open for 4 hours
in the day – 2hours in the mornings and 2 hours in the evenings The Abhyasikas operate as support
classes where need-based counseling and continuous guidance are provided. This has enabled Swadhar,
IDWC to build rapport with the people in the community. This has enhanced the overall strength of the
educational programme in the community. Swadhar is hence keen to start more Abhyasikas at different
locations in Pune to provide support to the growing numbers of children who desire to study and educate
themselves.
